Water and Sewer

Miami International Airport 20-inch HDPE Forcemain

SCOPE OF WORK

A&P’s work with the Miami International Airport and Miami-Dade Water and Sewer serve as a prime example of our context sensitive solutions and our awareness of project issues.

On January 25, 2010, the 20” force main trunk that served MIA failed and sewage immediately covered the access ramps. In an emergency meeting, between the airport and MD-WASD officials, it was decided that a new 20”High-Density Polyethylene Pipe (HDEP) Pipe would replace the damaged pipe. In order to address the issue rapidly and avoid conflict with the airport, horizontal directional drilling was proposed.

Our responsibilities included the design of the proposed 20” pipe with careful attention place on existing features, inspections, and constructability. Because of our in-depth knowledge and the importance of this major project, we were able to fast-track the design; it was completed within 1 week. Less than 1 month later, on February 15th, the new force main was put into service.
